Throwback Thursday

My friend, Lisa, posted a great deal from Shutterfly, so I took advantage of that code to order a reusable shopping bag.  I only had to pay shipping.  After a lot of thought, I chose a photo I took in Denver when we went to Warped Tour.  MC Lars was very sweet, and I got a free CD when I told him I’m a teacher.  His Edgar Allan Poe rap songs are amazingly creative and catchy.  I have it in my CD player now.

MC Lars was making his way to his tent to sell some merch when Bela greeted him from the line.  He looked at her, smiled and said, ?Hey!  Come here, Cuddles!” and hugged her.  It’s one of our favorite memories.

Highlights

I can’t wait to wear this shirt.  I think my students will “get” it.  Ysabela and I watch a lot of Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out.

Stay Tuned

Stay tuned for more news concerning Warped Tour!  We are in Denver resting up for tomorrow’s concerts!  Scott was kind enough to drive after I got a bit misplaced.  He got us to the hotel, but we had almost three hours to kill before check in.  Scott (and Siri) managed to chauffeur us to Hot Topic at the Pavillion Mall…where I proceeded to spend way too much money.  In my defense, it was Bela’s first trip to that store, and there are so many cool things to buy!  Some of the T-shirts were on clearance, and the deal was buy one, get one for $1.  What else could I do?

After Hot Topic, Scott was able to navigate to Myxed Up Creations.  It was quite interesting, but I made no purchases there.  There were a lot of skull items on display.  After that, we hit Starbucks for some energy and motivation.  Our last stop before returning to La Quinta to check in was Hobby Lobby.

Fan Girl!

Ysabela nearly scared me to death yesterday.  We were sitting across the desk from each other when she checked her phone, took a breath and screamed!  I jumped like I’d been shot from a cannon.  I thought she had seen a spider or something!  It turned out that the text was to update her about Warped Tour.  One of her (many) favorite bands—Pierce the Veil—had signed on to appear!  She already has her ticket for Denver, so she is READY!

She's a fan girl for sure!

Warped Tour

My daughter is nuts about the coming Warped Tour concerts.  I signed up for concert alerts and fan club tickets sale information and discovered that the closest concert to us is in Denver.  To Ysabela’s delight, five bands she likes confirmed their participation today.  More announcements will be coming on Wednesdays for the next few weeks.  Being the super mom I am, I even signed her up to get updates.  As you might imagine, she was thrilled.

I found out that there is “reverse day care” at the concerts for parents who need to rest.  They will have a tent set up with air conditioning, beverages and misting fans.  A complimentary parent admission is also included for minors attending the show.  That’s pretty cool if you ask me.

What Ysabela doesn’t know (and since she doesn’t read my blog I can say this) is that I already have her an early Christmas gift—a ticket to the Denver concert!  If you hear a scream around Christmas time, it will be her.  🙂

Concert!

We left around 4:30 to make our way downtown to Summit Music Hall. We were glad we did because we found a decent parking space at a reasonable price. It was the cheapest to be had at $4 per hour. I paid an even $10 for the evening since the concert would last more than an hour. Near the ticket machine there was a sketchy guy beside a parked truck. I’m not sure he was fluent in English, but he did “request” a high-five. Another fellow walked up to him asking for drugs. He told him to go away. I paid as quickly as possible, put the ticket on the dash (taking the girls with me, of course) and we moved on down the street.

This reminded me of Mexico.

There was already a line, but we had our tickets in hand, so all that remained to be done was wait. Bela, the birthday girl, met Mari in person after chatting online for the last few months. They read each other’s stories on wattpad. Her mother, Diana, is a very nice lady. Her plan was to let her teens go enjoy the concert while she sat at the bar away from the foam. That was a good plan. She said they came every year to see Blood on the Dance Floor, so she filled me in on the usual happenings. We had plenty of time since the doors opened at 7.

The temperatures were in the eighties, but an occasional breeze kept us from melting. Bela held our place in line while Gen and I walked a couple of blocks to the nearest 7 11 for water. We made it back, drank our water and chatted with some people from Sidney, Nebraska. Small world. There were a lot of strange people in line. If it helps you picture it, Diana, Gen, Bela and I were the ones who stuck out like a sore thumb. I felt very out-of-place because 1) I’m old and 2) I was dressed in regular street clothes. One young boy had on furry leg warmers. With short shorts. No, I am not making this up! One guy had hair like a rainbow. When a blonde boy came by asking for donations to buy a ticket, Diana said he did the same thing every year.

Gen out of her comfort zone! I can relate!

Gen would have fit in better if she had worn these! One boy had on leg warmers made of the same stuff.

Periodic squeals of excitement punctuated the air as fans caught sight of their favorite performers going in and out of the back door at Summit Music Hall. One thing I will say about these singers is that they do interact with the fans. They took pictures with them and talked to them like they are important. It’s a good strategy because a band with no fan base fails. After two hours in line, our purses and/or backpacks were searched and we got in! I was asked for ID, but I wasn’t going to drink, so I got a slash marked on my hands. Diana perched on a bar stool facing the stage, and I landed on the stool beside her. The kids went as a pack to the “merch” tables to see what was for sale. Bela found me soon after for money to buy a CD and a foam finger. Just that fast, $20 was shot.

The opening acts took their time, but Bela and Gen said someone told them that one of Jayy Von Monroe’s suitcases was misplaced at the airport. They went on stage later than anticipated. I got the feeling that the stage persona is something the guys put on like a costume, but behind closed doors they are most likely nice people. I hope I’m correct in my assessment. I saw flashes of happiness on Jayy Von’s face as he smiled and waved to fans who caught his attention. It was as if he let down his guard somehow to connect with the fans.

I must say that the show was supposedly rated “all ages,” but the language should have made it at least a “16 and over” performance. The bad language ruined (for me) what could have been a decent concert. Mixed in with the profanity, there was a positive message that the kids should not be afraid to dream and pursue those dreams. The delivery of that message could have been better. One thing that has stayed with me is Dahvie Vanity saying, “You didn’t come here to be judged, am I right?” I tried to remember that after the concert when Bela was happily chattering about the fun she had. She was not “different” at the concert. She fit in and had a great time. I’m glad she enjoyed her birthday present, and I’m glad she has a best friend who loves her enough to leave her own comfort zone to go with her. Gen and Bela got some autographs and made some memories. 🙂 Gen and I joked that our ears got raped by what we heard at the concert!

Back to Denver

I am seriously going for the mom of the year title. Ysabela’s birthday is coming up, so I got us tickets for a concert. She had been talking nonstop about bands she likes, but one of her current faves is Blood on the Dance Floor. To make her birthday even better, her best friend is going with us!

We already have our room reserved at the same hotel we stayed in this weekend. I figure even if the downtown area is 15 minutes away, I can get there in good time, find parking and still have time to grab dinner before the concert. The downtown hotels are quite a bit more expensive, too. We always travel on a “shoe string budget.”

I’m sure Ysabela, Gen and I will have some awesome concert pictures. I will probably have fun watching the girls’ reactions to the concert. I’ll be sure to get some candids of them enjoying the show!

Audition Day!

I wanted to leave around 10, but the ladies in the room beside ours said we could follow them to Magness Arena. Colleen and Charlene were leaving close to 1. I decided we’d follow them, so we waited. According to Masha, the receptionist, many of the guests had already gone for early auditions.

Ysabela was happy to wait since she could spend time chatting with Mohammad. The funniest thing was that they were sitting in the same hotel room not five feet from each other having a Facebook conversation. That cracked me up! Before you get the wrong idea, Kemila and little brother Azume were also present, and the door was open. In between frequent smoke breaks, I told Kemila if Bela was bothering her, kick her out. Kemila responded, “She’s my daughter.”

Colleen (Charlene’s hypnotist) told me they had an extra room we could have if we needed it since we checked out at 1. I told them I’d pay for it, but Colleen said it wasn’t necessary. I told her to get her money back if we didn’t come back to La Quinta. My plan was to let Bela audition and drive straight home.

We met some really cool people on this little adventure. The open call did bring out the good, the bad and the ugly! There had to have been at least 1000 people waiting for a chance to sing.

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA

I was following Colleen and Charlene as planned when a black Escalade pulled between us. The girls made the turn, we had traffic and lost them! OH, NO! I can get lost in a paper bag! NOOOOOOOOOOO! So I took a deep breath, made the turn and saw a pay-per-hour parking lot. The Escalade turned in, and I followed. (Are you seeing a pattern in my travels?) I took the space right beside the Escalade. Out of the vehicle came three people. I knew right away someone was there to sing. Melissa was the one auditioning. Her husband and her mother were there for moral support. We waited in line together. As we chatted, one of the security people made an announcement that we needed to make sure we didn’t have matches, lighters, knives or any other “dangerous” things. It suddenly dawned on me that I had a knife in my purse. I was not about to walk back to the car and leave my knife there. I was afraid the line would start moving, and Bela would go in without me! I turned to Melissa’s husband and asked if he would stick my knife in his pocket since he couldn’t go in with his wife. He was such a kind person! He laughed and took it. Melissa’s mom was sitting in the shade holding a sign that said, “Missy J. All the Way!”

An announcement was also made that, once in line, the wait time was from two to four hours. That proved true. Outside there were four roped off lanes with three lines in each. Identification and audition passes were checked, purses were searched and everyone was “wanded.” I had expected to accompany Bela up to the door for her audition, but I was allowed to go in with her and her group! WHOOHOO! She sang with Taylor, Julia, Angelina and a few others. Some hopefuls had made the rounds from X Factor, American Idol and The Voice. There were a lot of awesome singers, and Bela, inexperienced but hopeful, did as well as anyone else. She represented well.

There is a major confidentiality clause in the contract everyone had to sign, but I can tell you I can’t break it because I don’t know anything beyond our experience. It was absolutely positive, and Ysabela hopes to go again.

The wait was almost over to sing!

The wait was almost over to sing!

Melissa ended up in another group, and when we got back to the car, their Escalade was gone. I looked on my windshield, and there was my knife. Pretty cool people….

Strange Night, Interesting Morning

I slept fitfully due to being in a strange place. The two-hour nap early in the evening had something to do with it as well. 🙂 I attribute my nightmare to keeping the TV on the Weather Channel’s Tornado Alley all night. During the two hours I slept, I dreamed about a tornado. I was working at the nursing home when a tornado warning came on the television. It was heading straight for our town! For some reason, the nursing home looked more like a warehouse, and there were kids all over the place.

Bela’s friend was in there, too, so she was reluctant to run home with me to wait out the danger in our basement. Somehow our dogs ended up in the nursing home “warehouse.” The tornado hit, I went flying through the air and apparently landed miles from home. I met some people, someone took me back to my town and I began looking for my crew. I found my dogs. Chance had also been picked up by the tornado; he had a cut on his shoulder, but both dogs would be fine. By the time I woke up, I still hadn’t found Bela. I finally went back to sleep…this time, without dreams.

Happy shower curtain advice

I beat the wake-up call, and was up before 7. That gave me time to shower and grab breakfast. I was a bit disappointed because there were no scrambled eggs. Isn’t it amazing how spoiled we can get? I helped an eccentric fellow named Steven make his breakfast waffle. He didn’t want to muss his fancy red jacket. He also had an audition at 2. According to him, red is the magic color because it sizzles. If you see Steven and his red jacket on The Voice this season, you’ll know it worked.

By the time my breakfast was done, Bela had had her shower and was ready to schmooze with the family down the hall. Turns out, there was a budding love connection happening. Mohammad is 16, gorgeous and friendly. His mom, Kemila, is a very nice lady. The little brother, Azume, is absolutely adorable. They are from Libya. Mohammad’s older brother, Tohi, is attending grad school at the University of Denver. Ysabela introduced them all (except the dad) to me. Kemila claimed Bela as her daughter. Does this mean she’s engaged? (Note to self: Google Libyan culture.) The family has been in the hotel for a month to be close to Tohi while he is getting settled.
