Analyze This

Dad and I were in a large parking lot with some buildings around, cars all over. He was looking for his truck, and I was trying to find my car. We split up in hopes of finding both vehicles. As soon as Dad was out of sight, I found myself inside one of the buildings, kidnapped. A Spanish-speaking lady and her daughter were cowering in the corner with me. There were a few dangerous looking Spanish-speaking men with knives guarding us. I knew there had to be other people somewhere on the premises. I wondered if Dad had found his truck and escaped. I knew I had to find my daughter immediately. I spoke to the lady quietly to avoid attention, asked how old her girl was. I was concerned about us all being assaulted, so I told the 12-year-old girl no matter what happened, survival was the most important thing.

I was allowed to go to the bathroom, which was through another room up some stairs. From there, I was somehow in a barracks-like structure. There were bunk beds in rows. My daughter was napping on the bottom bunk of one of them, so I woke her quietly and made sure she was fine. The funny thing was that her hair was shorter than it is now. Judging by that, her age must have been about 10 or 11.

I woke up with my heart pounding. My mind was working on a solution to get us out of there safely. I remember thinking I would hope the other woman and her daughter could escape with us, but my brain said I could trust no one. We could be betrayed if one of the thugs threatened her child and she could save her by telling our escape plan.

Analysis, anyone?

Kindness

I had wanted to bake some dog treats for a couple of weeks, so I finally did it. I made time to do something fun. My dogs love the peanut butter treats, and I enjoy delivering them to friends with dogs. My daughter ended up “taste testing” a couple of them! She was able to personally endorse the treats as we delivered them to neighbors.

Dog treat delivery!

Dog treat delivery!

I found out a neighbor had to put his beloved dog to sleep, but he found another canine that needed him. He was first on my list. I was sad, but glad he has company. She is a lovely dog, and she found a wonderful home.

We took treats to a ranching friend of mine as well. Her two dogs are adorable, of course. Then we dropped off a few treats to the best neighbor ever. All dogs seemed interested in the containers, so I think they will enjoy their snacks.

What did kindness cost me? I had the ingredients here waiting to be used. The containers were very economically priced at Oriental Trading Company. I ordered them months ago, so I might as well use them, right? I spent about an hour of my time and got my hands a little messy. Seeing the neighbors smile was pretty cheap.

Ode to Yoga Pants

Ever get in one of those silly, don’t-care moods? Been there all morning. This is the result.

Ode to Yoga Pants

Oh, yoga pants,
It’s you I love.
You fit my booty
Like a glove.

I buy two or three
Straight off the rack,
One color will do,
Only black!

Black hides the belly,
Or so I’m told.
I’ll wear you even when
I’m really old.

When I stretch up,
You don’t fall down
You’re so comfy
I never frown.

The poem is done,
But it’s not the end.
Oh, yoga pants…..
My bestest friend.

Mystery Caller

And the phone call went something like this:

Me: Hello? (I noticed the number was from Virginia, probably a cell phone, but I didn’t recognize the number.)

Mystery man: Hey, Kelly! How are you doing? Are you busy? (Virginia accent, adult male, could be one of my cousins since he called me by name)

Me: I’m fine! Just doing laundry. You doing OK? (stubbornly refusing to ask who it was)

Mystery man: Oh, yeah! I have been working for Company X, making good money for the last few years. Dad gave me your number. I didn’t know you’d come in. Did you make it to Pulaski last week? (AHA, a clue! That just ruled out Buddy, James and Allen.)

Me: I practically LIVED there!

Mystery man: So, where are you living now? The last time I heard anything you were in North Carolina. (Another clue! It’s been a long time since we have chatted.)

Me: Oh, my God! We went to Mexico for five years. Now we’re in Nebraska.

This continued for about 10 minutes. He had forgotten I might not recognize his voice, and I was not going to ask. I finally figured it out after a few more clues. He mentioned his kids, so that helped a lot! My cousin, Johnny, had decided to call me! Whew, that was a close one……glad it wasn’t one of my ex-boyfriends!

Leaving

Swapping toys....

Swapping toys….

The kids were both crying when it was time for us to leave. They swapped stuffed toys for a tangible reminder of the visit. The longer we stayed, the harder it was to think about heading back to Nebraska. We spent part of the day packing the car. There were tubs of books and pictures that had to be crammed in the car. Luckily, Mom knows how to pack! Dad helped a bit as well.

I tried to take a nap, but it was hard to get any sleep. After an hour and a half, I gave up. We had originally planned to leave around 11 p. m., but since I was up and alert, we pulled out around 8 instead. I knew the drive home would be brutal. Bela and I amused ourselves playing Banana! and Punch Bug! again. If you happened to be driving a yellow car and saw strange people pointing at you, it was probably us!

I will treasure all the memories we brought back with us. Every picture reminds me of something or someone special. There was mention made of us returning in the summer…….not too sure about that yet!

Coming Home

The car was packed—and I mean PACKED—as full as we could get it.

No extra space!

Driving down the road, I felt like

We stopped several times to get fuel for ourselves and the car. I desperately needed rest, but I desperately wanted to get home. My Uncle Roger’s directions were spot on, and we were making good time. I was in need of a rest break (again), so we stopped at a rest area. Ysabela had taken a nap, so her energy level was higher than mine.

Frazzled and tired….

The good news is we made it without drama. The bad news is I’m not really ready to be at work again tomorrow!
