How Has Blogging Changed My Life?

Writing Challenge

Writing Challenge

I see things with a fresh perspective now. I have only been blogging a (very) short time, but I feel the need to take pictures of everything in case I might need something special for my blog posts. I do my best thinking when my hands are busy with laundry and my mind is flying free somewhere else.

Fire-fighting Women

When I called and told my parents I had joined the local fire department, my mom said, “You WHAT?” The next question was, “WHY?” Her natural worry, of course, was for my safety. I can also understand her concerns for my younger daughter if I died in the line of duty. As one of two females on the fire department at the time, I sometimes asked myself why I joined too!

The guys have all been great. I never asked them to change their behavior or language for my benefit. I wanted to fit in with them, not change the dynamics of the station.

As you might expect, training is hard work. I really need to get in shape! (In my defense, round is a shape.) One man in particular (he knows who he is!) encouraged me when I thought about giving up. He made me climb a ladder, lock on and hang over the side. Did I mention I’m afraid of heights? This man was also the first to offer his congrats when I (barely) passed my live fire test! Thanks to all the firemen, I have learned so much. I still get the feeling that they have forgotten more than I’ll ever learn.

I look forward to fire school every year. I have been able to learn about crime scene investigation, anti-terrorism and so much more. The highlight so far was watching a good-looking SWAT team fellow blow things up! Who knows what I’ll get into this year!

Vicky Earl, thanks for helping take pictures!

Things That Make Me Angry

1. People who look for excuses not to do something rather than finding a way to accomplish something
2. People who think pets are disposable
3. Hearing someone say, “Why do we have to learn a foreign language?”
4. People who make fun of others
5. Whining
6. Character flaws like cheating, lying, etc.
7. Uninvited guests (unless it’s someone I love–if you have to ask, it’s not you)
8. Being pressured (to buy something, work extra, etc.—I get to decide)
9. Parents who have no authority
10. People who mind my business (unless you pay my bills, stay out of my personal life)

What Blogging Has Taught Me

NaBloPoMo_March_2014_self
I have learned that the more work I have to do, the more I can get done. That might sound like a given, but not all people are like that. Many just complain about how much they have to do, but nothing ever gets accomplished. I’m the type of woman who makes a list and checks things off. I have been known to not have an item on my list, remember it and add it just so I can mark it “done.” I’m weird like that.
My mom always said if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. A busy person knows how to manage her time to make things happen.

Blogging—Best or Worst of Me?

I think blogging brings out the best in me because I approach each post thinking, “If I were a busy person with only 10 minutes of free time, would I read this post?” I find that I try to limit my “snarky” side and take the “high road” more often than not.

The funniest part of blogging—to me, anyway—is that I like to check my stats daily. I dream of the day that all countries are “lit up” by readers! I dream BIG!

Most Like Myself

I feel the most like I want to be when I am having coffee and eating Chinese food with my best friend! Going to the bookstore with another friend is cool! Spending time with family is also great. That time is coming SOON!
Professionally speaking, I enjoy presenting at foreign language conferences. Attending fire school (as a volunteer firefighter) is awesome because I love to learn new things.

Facts About Me

So I signed up for the NaBloPoMo March writing challenge today. The goal is to blog every day, and there are prompts to assist me. I missed yesterday’s prompt, so I will tell you five interesting facts about myself to get on track.

1. I took belly dance class and enjoyed it!
2. My soul mate is stuck (for now) in another country.
3. I prefer the company of my pets to people.
4. I can wiggle my ears.
5. I also have the (dubious) talent of talking like Donald Duck.
