Bad to Good

My question to my friend was, “Why do I always worry so much when God has everything under control?”  Maybe I should explain from the beginning….

One of our little furry family members wasn’t acting right.  He was listless and snappy.  Chance (AKA Fancy Pants) never snaps at my daughter!  He acted like his back hurt, and he had trouble jumping on the bed.  I called the vet yesterday, gave Chance a dose of aspirin and planned to “wait and see.”

Pretty soon it was bed time, but I was worried about our boy, so I couldn’t sleep.  I usually get up at four in the morning to do laundry at the nursing home, but I gave up on getting to sleep by ten.  I figured I could go in to do some laundry early.   I can do a lot of laundry in three or four hours!  I had everything washed and delivered upstairs so the floor would be well stocked; that made it possible for me to take Chance to the vet this morning.  (I went to work after that to finish the laundry.)

After catching a few hours of sleep, Bela and I got up and took Chance to Hyannis.  The vet determined that Chance has some arthritis and would benefit from being on a prescription.  Sometimes we forget that our little guy is aging….he is eleven or so.  He has more grey on his muzzle than before, but we don’t discuss it.  (After all, he doesn’t mention my grey hair!)

I was running low on money, but I had to take care of our Chance, so I was relieved when the vet said he could bill me.  I paid something anyway, though, to lessen the payment later.  With what I didn’t pay, I was able to buy us breakfast.  I knew Bela was as hungry as I was since we had hopped out of bed and hit the road.  I went to the local “breakfast spot” to see what I could do.  (I would like to insert here that I’m sure God knows the state of shambles affairs concerning my check book!)  I went in to order myself some egg rolls since I know from experience that they rock!  I get some every time I am in Hyannis….

I noticed there were no hamburgers in the case.  Breakfast was technically over, but there were some “tornadoes” in the hot case.  The clerk handed me one and said, “Oh, it’s free since it’s left over from breakfast.”  I sure was relieved—and shocked!  Did I mention this store also has free coffee?

This little jaunt to the vet turned out quite a bit better than I had anticipated!  Chance is fine, and we had all we needed.  So, why do I worry so much?

Chance is in his favorite spot. He might be holding a grudge about the vet trip.

Trip to Bow

My daughter had a doctor’s appointment today, so we headed out of town to Broken Bow.  The temperature at that time of the morning was negative three.  (We were hit by a heat wave on the way home when the temperature rose to a balmy 15.)  We had a rocky start even though we had time to hit our local coffee shop for a caffeine fix.  Bela’s cup had a leak, so we had to rush home for a replacement before topping off the gas tank.  I’ll admit I was a little annoyed, but I got over it.

We made it to the office only two minutes late.  Dr. Pruden checked Ysabela over and decided that her complaints were easy to remedy.  🙂  The exam rooms are nicely decorated and feel almost cozy.  Each room has a saying on the door.  I liked that Bela was in the “count your blessings” room.  It reminded me that life (and our health) could be so much worse!  When we focus on the little daily annoyances, it’s easy to miss the big picture.

We all need a reminder sometimes.

Inside Dogs (and Cats!)

The weather outside is frightful, but the fire….you can sing the rest, I’m sure.  Can we remember our furry friends before we get cozy in front of the fireplace?

Some people think animals can handle below zero temperatures.  Maybe those people should try sitting in an outside dog house for an hour before they decide.  Animals should be family members, right?  Mine sure are!  They snuggle in the house with us all the time.  We take them out to potty, but they certainly don’t live outside.

One of our little dogs is very “thin-skinned.”  She has short fur and gets cold easily.  Yes, my friends, she does have a sweater!  Is that a reason to put her out in the kennel for en extended period of time in extremely cold weather?  NO!

If you happen to see an animal out in the cold, please take action!  Talk to the owner and offer support and/or advice as needed.  If no action is taken and the animal is still suffering in the cold, call your local police.  Family members deserve better.

Bela and BVB

My daughter is a devoted fan of Black Veil Brides.  Andy is one of her many favorites.  She somehow found an address for his parents.  Before Christmas, she sent a fan letter to the address hoping it would reach Andy Biersack.  When I checked the mail today, a letter from Andy’s mom, Amy, was waiting for her.  It was so cool—it even had a Batman stamp!  Bela saw the stamp peeking out from under the rest of the mail and said, “Whoever sent that letter with the Batman stamp is the coolest person ever!”  I chuckled to myself since I already knew who sent it.

Bela was ecstatic when she opened the envelope!  I would like to thank Amy for her kind response.  It made Bela’s day!

Check out the cool stamp!

2014—Thank You to My Readers!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 3,000 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 50 trips to carry that many people.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of my readers.  My first year of blogging was awesome because of you!

Write It Down!

In my second job, I spend a lot of time at the local nursing home.  Yesterday I took time to ask a resident about her teaching career.  We ended up talking about kids then and now, and she told me a couple of stories about her students and her own children.  I enjoyed talking to her, but I still had some work to do.  I will go back soon; hopefully I can get some of her stories written down so they won’t be lost with the passing of time.  The stories of our elders are full of wisdom and humor.

I wish I had taken the time to write down stories from my grandparents before they were gone forever.  Nanny and Pawpie sure did a lot of living.  Grandma could have told some interesting stories as well.  Hindsight is 20/20, so please take my advice so you won’t make my mistake.  With the technology available today, you can have videos of your loved ones telling stories themselves.  Just imagine if I had been able to take videos of my grandparents.  My grandchildren and great-grandkids would have been able to not only see the people I loved and lost, but they would have been able to hear their voices!  What a gift!

For those of you with young children, I also say: Write things down!  (Laura and Keith, I am thinking of you when I give this advice!)  One day your memory will dim, and you will be confused as to which kid said what!  Trust me because I have already had it happen to me!  (I’m only 47, for crying out loud!)  In this day and age, there’s no reason not to document family gatherings, stories and memories of the people we love.

Lena could have told some great stories.
