ACTFL Conference

I was lucky enough to go to my very first ACTFL conference last week in San Antonio. It was the result of an interesting chain of events.

In 2012, I had taken a class taught by Dr. Ali Moeller and Carolina Bustamante. It was a technology class taught in Spanish focusing on the books Cajas de carton and Senderos fronterizos by Francisco Jimenez. I learned more in that class than I have in any other. I worked hard, but I feel very competent with technology.

The best part about the tech class was that the participants took the it free due to a grant! At our first face-to-face meeting, we were told the funds would be disbursed to keep us from having to pay for it and then receiving a check back. That was the greatest gift of all because I had no idea how I was going to come up with $1200 up front. I cried all the way home. I didn’t know it then, but that tech class was the first step toward my Master’s degree. I got the news today that I passed my comps, so I am on track to graduate next month!

I sent a thank-you email to both Dr. M. and Carolina to let them know what the tech class meant to me. I received a gracious response from Dr. M. followed by a an invitation from Carolina. She asked me to be a co-presenter at the ACTFL conference. She wrote an amazing proposal, and it was accepted! That was my path to my first ACTFL experience. For those who are not aware, it is the largest gathering of foreign language teachers in the United States (that I know of). There were approximately 6000 teachers in attendance in San Antonio. The icing on the cake was the mariachi band competition in the same place! The group of students from Roma, Texas won. I know that because the abuela (grandma) of one of the students was at our hotel.

Carolina and I met up at the airport and took a taxi to the hotel she had booked. Red Roof Plus was a better deal than other hotels closer to the Henry Gonzalez Convention Center. It was about a 10-minute walk. Denny’s was the mid-point, so I had a couple of meals there. 🙂 The prices were reasonable, and I could rest my poor feet. My feet were killing me Saturday, but I’ll get to that later.

The exhibitor’s section was huge. I spent all evening and part of a day there just getting free products and making contacts. I picked up a French book for Ysabela and some candies to share with her as well. The attendees are expected to get a lot of samples because when we all checked in we received a large red bag for all the loot! We also got our official badge that could be scanned at vendor booths for more free stuff. The badge had ribbons that we had to attach. I got three for mine: pink, red and blue. Carolina had two on hers.

We got to the convention center right at 6 p. m. when registration was about to close for the day. Getting checked in at closing time was not so easy! Carolina made sure the harried clerk took care of us, but it took some persuading. Two other women got in line behind us. The clerk wasn’t going to check me in until we promised to make sure others knew the line was officially closed after those last two ladies behind me. More came, but we told them the line had already been closed, so they would have to come back in the morning. I think they were staying at the hotel next to the conference center, so it wasn’t such a big deal.

Coolest table in school!

Coolest table in school!

Thanks to DonorsChoose.org and U. S. Cellular out of Chicago, my classroom now has six bean bag chairs! We replaced four of our chairs and dropped the table to the lowest level. My students love it, and so do I!

FUNDAY!

Early this week I was able to take a few students (and one incredibly cool parent sponsor) to Ennio Emmanuel’s Spanish language concert. The annual tour is put on by the Justo Lamas Group. I look forward to it all year long! There is always a positive message for students, and lots of students get to sing, dance or play instruments on stage with Ennio.

Justo and Ennio have both taken time after the 90-minute funfest to sign autographs and take pictures with everyone.

Teachers were invited on stage to receive a hug and a gift. This year we got lapel pins. Ennio always smells really yummy! :)

Hanal Pixan

I have started setting up the altar for Hanal Pixan (Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead). I have a picture of my grandparents as the centerpiece, but there are so many other pictures I could add. I also included a picture of Ysabela with La Catrina and a frame with a few photos of the graveyard in Seye. I wanted to include those last two frames to help educate the students.

I have an arch of marigolds, the flower of the dead. The arch allows the spirits to pass through to visit the living. There are several elements to add, of course, so this is a work in progress.

There is an explanation of Dia de los Muertos along with the pictures. This is part of Ysabela's State Fair exhibit.

Shoes for All!

Once upon a time, a friend of one of the parents at our school had a shoe store. The owner made the decision to close the store, then she donated the remaining shoes to our school. What a kind thing to do! Once the shoes arrived, the secretary made an announcement for the girls to find time to stop in the office to try on some shoes.

There were some really happy girls at the end of the day! My daughter snagged two nice pairs to add to her accessory wardrobe.

Accidental Minion

I came to school planning to check out costumes for Homecoming Week, and ended up in the middle of things. The theme of the day was “movie character,” so as I walked down the hall I saw Batman, Tom Cruise, a pair of bunnies and some Ninja Turtles. I knew the principal and some teachers were dressing up as characters from Despicable Me, so I wanted to make sure I got a picture. The principal saw me and said, “We need another minion! Come here.” Huh. That’s how I became a minion.

Videos for Homework?

I have been doing a lot of reading about blended learning and flipped classrooms, so I am actively searching for good videos to assign as homework. If students get to watch a video, it takes the work out of homework.

I have found a few good ones to explain the proper use of each of the two past tenses in Spanish, so I guess I’ll see which students actually do the homework when I give a quiz next week.

Concert Time is Coming!

I took my Spanish Honor Society students to a Spanish language concert last year. The performer, Ennio Emmanuel, was sponsored by the Justo Lamas Group. Justo always puts on a fabulous show, and Ennio didn’t disappoint either. Both singers are inspirational, approachable and adorable. This year I will be taking a smaller group (due to our school athletic calendar), but we plan to have a great time. I am looking forward to the concert in October (as you can probably tell!).

Justo and Ennio both work hard to motivate students to speak Spanish and enjoy it. The audience members get plenty of chances to go on stage and sing or dance. Even teachers get into the act! Look the guys up on Facebook, and if you’re a Spanish teacher, consider hosting a concert. You won’t be sorry!
